Help us to make the regulation of barristers fit for the challenges of the future. The BSB is seeking a Senior Policy Officer to support our work to refresh the BSB Handbook.
In this role you will be key to ensuring that our refreshed Handbook is easier to use and understand, while still allowing us to take a risk-based approach to regulation and meet our regulatory objectives.
You will be part of the Bar Standard Board’s Strategy and Policy team, which manages and develops specific policies, guidance, and obligations to regulate barristers and specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales in the public interest.
Your work will focus updating the BSB Handbook, the BSB’s core regulatory text, encompassing the Barrister’s Code of Conduct, rules governing entry into the profession, and the BSB’s oversight of barristers’ scope of practice, amongst other provisions. You will lead on specific projects under the programme and will support and coordinate with colleagues across the BSB who are working on projects supporting updating the Handbook.
This is an exciting time to join the BSB as we develop our capabilities as part of a programme of transformative change. You’ll play a key part of this change, contributing significantly to the update of the Handbook and supporting guidance. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a major regulatory reform project in a dynamic regulatory environment.

Key skills and experience required to undertake the role include:
Experience of working in policy development for a regulator or an organisation working in a regulated industry
Draft documents, undertake analyses and make recommendations for actions
Support project delivery, including creating and managing planning documents
Run internal and external engagement to create and promote policy objectives
Experience or understanding of the legal services market would be beneficial
